RAISING DISCIPLES IN RURAL COMMUNITIES
Introduction:
Beloved, today I bring you a burden from the heart of God — a message that calls us not just to preach, but to raise disciples, especially in rural communities. The Great Commission is not a call to make converts alone; it is a command to make disciples (Matthew 28:19-20).
I am Evangelist John Emmanuel, and I believe that if we are truly going to fulfill the heartbeat of God, we must intentionally invest in the discipleship of men and women in places often forgotten — rural villages, remote hamlets, and interior communities.

I. Understanding the Mandate of Discipleship
📖 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you…”
— Matthew 28:19-20
Discipleship is not optional — it is the central command of the Great Commission. Jesus didn’t merely ask us to hold crusades or plant churches, but to make disciples — people who will learn of Him, follow Him, and reproduce His life in others.
In rural areas, people are often reached with a one-time gospel presentation, but are rarely discipled. This must change.

II. Why Rural Communities Matter to God
📖 “Does he not leave the ninety-nine… and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?”
— Luke 15:4
Rural communities are like the “one sheep” in the parable — easily forgotten, but deeply loved by the Shepherd. Jesus values every soul, whether in a city or in a village.
✅ Rural communities are rich grounds for revival
✅ Many unreached people live in rural regions
✅ Children and youth in these areas are hungry for mentorship

III. Jesus' Discipleship Model: Relationship and Teaching
📖 “And he appointed twelve, so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach…”
— Mark 3:14
Jesus first called His disciples to be with Him before sending them. Discipleship involves:
1. Time – Building relationships
2. Teaching – Imparting truth
3. Training – Equipping for service
4. Trust – Releasing them to go and do likewise
We must bring this model into our rural engagements.

IV. Steps to Raising Disciples in Rural Communities
1. Engage Intentionally
Don’t just do a one-off program. Stay long enough to know the people.
Jesus spent three years with His disciples.
2. Start with a Few 📖 “And the things you have heard… entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” — 2 Timothy 2:2
Look for faithful individuals who are willing to grow.
Train them to reach others — a multiplication strategy.
3. Teach Foundational Truths
The gospel
Prayer and the Word
The Holy Spirit
Holiness
Evangelism
4. Build House Fellowships and Cell Groups
Where formal churches may not be available, raise home-based fellowships.
📖 Acts 2:46-47 shows us how the early church thrived in homes.
5. Empower with Skills and Stewardship
Equip them with skills and wisdom to sustain their walk and witness.
Paul discipled tentmakers, and they were economically empowered (Acts 18:1-4).
6. Encourage Community Ownership
Let the locals lead. Your goal is not dependence, but independence in Christ.
Discipleship is reproducing leaders, not gathering followers.
---
V. Overcoming Challenges in Rural Discipleship
📖 “Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
Challenge: Poor infrastructure
🔄 Response: Use available means — bicycles, phones, open-air gatherings.
Challenge: Illiteracy
🔄 Response: Use oral teaching, Bible storytelling, and visual aids.
Challenge: Resistance from traditional beliefs
🔄 Response: Love, patience, and consistent witness will break the walls.
Challenge: Few workers
🔄 Response: Pray for laborers — Matthew 9:37-38
---
VI. The Reward of Rural Discipleship
📖 “Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky… and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” — Daniel 12:3
Transformed lives
Thriving rural churches
A generation raised in truth
Eternal reward
---
Conclusion:
Beloved, God is calling us not just to preach, but to raise disciples — men and women rooted in Christ, living in obedience, and multiplying others. Especially in rural communities, where many are hungry but neglected.
📖 “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few...” — Luke 10:2
Will you rise today as a laborer? Will you commit not just to evangelize, but to disciple?

Call to Action:
Let us commit to:
✅ Adopt a rural village
✅ Train faithful believers
✅ Establish discipleship systems
✅ Support and empower rural Christians
Let our legacy be this: we raised disciples for Jesus where others only visited.
God bless you.
