THE REAL DEATH: A LIFE WITHOUT CHRIST
Sermon Title:
“The Real Death: A Life Without Christ”
By Evangelist John Emmanuel
Text: John 11:25-26, Ephesians 2:1-5, Romans 8:6-11
Introduction:
Many in the world define death merely as the cessation of breathing or the separation of the spirit from the body. But God’s Word reveals a deeper and more alarming reality: the true death is not physical, but spiritual — a life without Christ. Physical death is simply the shedding of the earthly shell, but spiritual death is eternal separation from God.
Let us explore what God says about life, death, and the only way to escape eternal death — through Jesus Christ.
1. Understanding Physical Death
“And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” — Ecclesiastes 12:7
Physical death is temporary — it is simply the moment when man’s spirit separates from his body. The body returns to the dust, but the soul lives on.
“For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God…eternal in the heavens.” — 2 Corinthians 5:1
Death, in its physical form, does not end existence; it only transitions the soul to the next phase — either to eternal life or eternal judgment.
2. The Real Death: Spiritual Death
“But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.” — 1 Timothy 5:6
Many walk around breathing, eating, and working, yet in the eyes of God, they are already dead because they are separated from the Source of Life — Jesus Christ.
“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.” — Ephesians 2:1
Spiritual death is the absence of Christ in the human spirit. A man without Christ is spiritually dead, regardless of his physical vitality.
Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life…” — John 14:6
To reject Christ is to reject life itself, thus remaining in death.
3. Death Entered Through Sin
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; so death passed upon all men…” — Romans 5:12
Adam’s disobedience brought spiritual death into the world. Ever since, every man born of flesh has been born spiritually dead, in need of resurrection by the Spirit of God.
“For the wages of sin is death…” — Romans 6:23
This death is not just physical, but eternal separation from God. Hell is the full manifestation of that separation.
4. Jesus Came to Give Life
“The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life…” — John 10:10
Jesus came to restore life — not just existence, but eternal life, a life in union with God. When a person accepts Christ, they pass from death to life:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth…is passed from death unto life.” — John 5:24
5. The Evidence of Life in Christ
If Christ is in you:
- You walk in righteousness — Romans 8:10
- You bear the fruit of the Spirit — Galatians 5:22-23
- You have peace with God — Romans 5:1
- You are no longer condemned — Romans 8:1
But if Christ is not in you, though you breathe, you are a dead man walking.
6. Physical Death Is Not the End for the Believer
“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live…” — John 11:25-26
For the believer, physical death is only a transition. We look forward to a resurrection to glory. Paul says:
“To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” — 2 Corinthians 5:8
7. Warning to the Unbeliever
“And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.” — Revelation 20:15
The second death is eternal. It is the final separation from God. It is not annihilation — it is conscious, eternal separation, a real death that never ends.
Conclusion: What is Your Status?
- Do you merely exist, or do you truly live in Christ?
- Are you physically alive but spiritually dead?
- Have you been born again?
Altar Call:
“He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.” — 1 John 5:12
Beloved, choose life today. Repent and receive Jesus into your heart. Don’t wait to die physically before realizing you were already dead spiritually. There is resurrection power in Christ, and He is ready to give you life — now and forevermore.
Let Us Pray:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of life through Jesus Christ. Open our eyes to the reality of true death and awaken our hearts to embrace the life You offer. Let every soul hearing this word receive life in Christ and escape eternal death. In Jesus' name, amen.
